Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old male of Bangladeshi descent, was tragically killed in a mass shooting on July 28, 2025, in a Midtown Manhattan office building. An immigrant from Bangladesh, Islam was an officer with the New York Police Department, assigned to the 47th Precinct in the Bronx. On the evening of his death, he was working off-duty in uniform as a security guard at 345 Park Avenue.
He was a married father of two young sons, and his wife was pregnant with their third child at the time of his death.
The gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas, entered the lobby of the building shortly after 6:00 PM and opened fire with a rifle. Officer Islam was the first person shot in the lobby. The shooter then proceeded to other floors, killing three other people before taking his own life. An M4 rifle was recovered at the scene.
Authorities described the shooter as a 'crazed lunatic' and noted he had a history of mental health issues. The investigation revealed that the gunman had driven across the country from Las Vegas and appeared to have targeted the building, which houses the NFL headquarters, among other businesses. A note left by the shooter indicated he believed he had CTE, a brain injury associated with contact sports, and blamed the NFL.
In the wake of the tragedy, Didarul Islam was hailed as a hero who died protecting the city he loved. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Detective First Grade. His funeral was held at a mosque in the Bronx, attended by thousands of fellow officers, city officials, and community members. Weeks after his death, his widow gave birth to their third son. The investigation into the shooting indicated that a coworker of the gunman had purchased the lower receiver of the weapon used in the attack and was cooperating with authorities.
