Kevin Janson Neal: Rancho Tehama Mass Murder, November 2017
Overview
On November 13–14, 2017, 44-year-old Kevin Janson Neal carried out a murderous shooting spree centered in the rural community of Rancho Tehama Reserve in Tehama County, California. Over eight crime scenes—including neighborhood roads and Rancho Tehama Elementary School—Neal killed five people (not counting himself) and wounded many others before the rampage ended. He had killed his wife the day before at their home.
Timeline of the Crimes
November 13, 2017 (Evening) — At his residence at 6970 Bobcat Lane, Neal shot his wife, later concealing her body beneath the floorboards. This killing preceded the public rampage and was discovered by detectives after the spree.
November 14, 2017 (7:54–8:19 a.m. PT) — Neal first attacked neighbors with whom he’d had prior conflicts, then stole a pickup and roamed local roads firing at motorists and pedestrians. He rammed the gates of Rancho Tehama Elementary School and fired repeatedly through windows and walls while the school was on lockdown, injuring students but unable to enter the classrooms. He then fled, crashed into another vehicle, shot at additional victims, and was finally stopped when officers rammed his car. The shooting sequence lasted roughly twenty-five minutes.
Casualties and Injuries
Across the incidents, five people were killed by Neal on November 14, in addition to his wife killed the prior evening. Numerous others were injured by gunfire and flying glass. At the elementary school specifically, multiple students were wounded but none were killed; federal summaries later noted five students injured at the school phase.
