Jared Loughner: 2011 Tucson Mass Shooting

Overview

On January 8, 2011, Jared Lee Loughner carried out a mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona, during a constituent meeting called "Congress on Your Corner" held by U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords. The attack took place outside a Safeway grocery store and shocked the nation due to its brutality and the high-profile target. Loughner, who was 22 years old at the time, opened fire with a semi-automatic pistol, killing six people and injuring 13 others, including Rep. Giffords.

The Crime

Shortly after 10 a.m. on January 8, 2011, Loughner approached the event where Rep. Giffords was meeting with constituents. He drew a Glock 19 pistol and began shooting into the crowd. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head at point-blank range but miraculously survived. Witnesses at the scene managed to subdue Loughner after he ran out of ammunition, preventing even more bloodshed.

Victims

The attack left six people dead and 13 others wounded. Among those killed were a federal judge, a congressional aide, and a 9-year-old child. The victims are remembered as follows:

• Christina-Taylor Green – Age 9, born on September 11, 2001. She was the youngest victim, attending the event with a neighbor.
• John Roll – Age 63, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona. He had stopped by the event to support Rep. Giffords.
• Gabriel Zimmerman – Age 30, community outreach director for Rep. Giffords. He was a key staff member at the event.
• Dorothy Morris – Age 76, attending with her husband who was also wounded.
• Dorwan Stoddard – Age 76, who died shielding his wife during the gunfire.
• Phyllis Schneck – Age 79, a local resident who had come to meet her congresswoman.
