Stanley Neace and the 2010 Kentucky Mobile Home Park Massacre

Overview

On September 11, 2010, Stanley Neace carried out a deadly shooting rampage at a small mobile home community near Jackson, Kentucky. Neace, a 47-year-old resident of rural Breathitt County, fatally shot five people, including his wife and several neighbors, before taking his own life. The violence unfolded across multiple residences in the Mount Carmel area, leaving six people dead in total and devastating a closely connected Appalachian community. The killings appeared to begin after an argument between Neace and his wife inside or near their home. Investigators said Neace became enraged and retrieved a shotgun. He then shot his wife before moving through the mobile home park and attacking neighbors who were nearby. Some of the victims reportedly attempted to intervene, investigate the disturbance, or escape after hearing the first shots.

The Shooting Rampage

During the late morning of September 11, residents in the mobile home community heard shouting and gunfire. Stanley Neace first confronted and shot his wife, Sandra Neace. He then walked to neighboring mobile homes while armed with the shotgun. The compact arrangement of the residences allowed him to move rapidly from one victim to another. Neace shot people both inside and outside the homes. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as residents realized an armed man was moving through the neighborhood. Several victims were members of related or closely associated families, a common circumstance in the small community where many residents knew one another personally. Emergency calls brought Kentucky State Police officers and other responders to the area. Officers established a perimeter around the mobile homes while attempting to determine where Neace was located. Investigators later said he had returned to his own residence after killing the five victims. Police tried to communicate with Neace and ordered him to surrender. Before officers could take him into custody, Neace fatally shot himself. His death brought the immediate threat to an end, but responders were then confronted with several crime scenes spread across the neighboring properties.
