In the autumn of 2014, the life of 25-year-old Tyerre Allen, a Black male from Indianapolis, Indiana, came to a sudden and violent end. On November 18th, events unfolded inside a Cash America Pawn shop on East 38th Street that would leave Allen dead and another man grappling with the aftermath of a life-or-death confrontation. Shortly after entering the establishment, Allen reportedly brandished a weapon, signaling the beginning of an attempted robbery.
His actions, however, were met
with unexpected resistance. A customer who was inside the pawn shop at the time was also armed. An exchange of gunfire erupted between the two men. In the chaotic moments that followed, Allen was struck multiple times by bullets from the customer's weapon. The injuries proved fatal, and when emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene, Tyerre Allen was pronounced dead.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department investigators who responded to the incident identified Allen as the suspect in the attempted robbery. It was also revealed that he had recently been released from the Indiana Department of Correction after serving time for a prior robbery conviction. The customer who fired the fatal shots was not publicly identified by authorities but was reported to be cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.
In the wake of the shooting, law enforcement officials indicated that the customer's actions were likely to be considered a case of self-defense under Indiana's laws. The case was expected to be reviewed by the Marion County Prosecutor's Office to make a final determination on whether any charges would be filed against the customer who, according to authorities, was left traumatized by the violent encounter. No arrests were made in connection with the shooting of Tyerre Allen.
