In the early summer of 2021, a grim discovery was made in an Indianapolis neighborhood that would unravel a story of familial conflict turned fatal. The body of 47-year-old Darrell Hoagland, a White/Caucasian male, was found in the backyard of a vacant house on Carson Avenue on June 1, 2021. An investigation by the Marion County Coroner's Office would later confirm that he had been shot to death.
His body, wrapped in a blanket and tied with a rope, was in a state of advanced decomposition when it was located.
The investigation into the death of Darrell Hoagland quickly led authorities to a suspect surprisingly close to home: his own uncle, 52-year-old John Hoagland. Within a day of his nephew's body being found, John was arrested by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and faced a preliminary charge of murder.
According to court documents, the tragic series of events began with a heated argument between the uncle and nephew on May 24, 2021. The dispute reportedly stemmed from John Hoagland's belief that his nephew had cost him a potential security job by disclosing his uncle's prior felony conviction to the employer. In the midst of their confrontation, John Hoagland allegedly shot his nephew with a 9mm handgun.
Following the shooting, John Hoagland admitted to investigators that he had wrapped his nephew's body in a blanket, securing it with a hemp rope from a cat toy. He then placed the body in the trunk of his car and drove to the vacant property on Carson Avenue, where he left it in the backyard. In an attempt to conceal the crime, he also tried to clean the blood from the floor and walls of his home. John Hoagland was subsequently held without bond in the Marion County Jail as the Marion County Prosecutor's Office prepared to make a final decision on the charges against him.
