In the late hours of a March evening in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the sound of gunfire shattered the night, leading to the tragic death of 28-year-old Brandon Lamar Phillips, a Black male. On March 17, 2016, police responded to reports of shots fired on Bowser Avenue. Their investigation led them to the 4500 block of Oliver Street, where they discovered a black Dodge that had crashed into a parked car.
Inside the vehicle, they found Phillips suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Paramedics rushed Phillips to a local hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries a few days later. The Allen County Coroner's Office subsequently ruled his death a homicide, marking it as the sixth in the county for that year. The investigation suggested that Phillips' death was the result of a gun battle that had erupted between two vehicles.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a black Jeep fleeing the area shortly after the gunshots rang out. A vehicle matching this description was located by police a few blocks away on Winter Street and was impounded for further investigation. Adding another layer to the case, a second male victim with gunshot wounds arrived at a Fort Wayne hospital later that same night in serious condition. Authorities believe the two shootings are connected, though the exact nature of their relationship remains unclear.
Despite the ongoing investigation and the leads they have pursued, law enforcement officials have not yet made any arrests in connection with the murder of Brandon Phillips. The case remains open as police continue to seek information from the public that could lead to the identification and apprehension of a suspect or suspects.
