In Fort Wayne, Indiana, a young man’s life was cut short in a burst of violence that shattered the midday calm of a Walmart parking lot. Devon Evans Herdle, a 23-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on Thursday, March 21, 2024, in what authorities believe was a drug deal that spiraled into a deadly encounter. The incident unfolded around 11:40 a.m.
at the Southtown Crossing shopping center, leaving the community shaken and searching for answers.
According to police, Herdle was seated in his vehicle when another car pulled up. A man, later identified as 20-year-old Micah K. Nunn, allegedly exited his vehicle, entered Herdle's car, and opened fire. The assailant then fled the scene, leaving Herdle with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders arrived to find the critically injured young man and transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The Allen County Coroner's Office later confirmed the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds and officially ruled the manner of death a homicide.
The investigation into Herdle’s death moved swiftly. The Fort Wayne Police Department identified Micah Nunn as the primary suspect and released his description to the public, cautioning that he should be considered armed and dangerous. The search for Nunn was short-lived, as he was taken into custody without incident the following day, on Friday, March 22, 2024. He was located in the 3000 block of West Coliseum Boulevard.
Following his arrest, Micah K. Nunn was preliminarily charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of Devon Evans Herdle. He was booked into the Allen County Jail as the legal process against him began. The tragic death of Devon Herdle marked the 12th homicide in Allen County for the year 2024, a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of gun violence within the community. The case remains a somber illustration of a life lost and another irrevocably altered by a violent confrontation.
