In the summer of 2021, the life of 12-year-old Mario A. Gilmer Jr., a Black male, was tragically cut short in Fort Wayne, Indiana. On the evening of Monday, June 14th, Mario was reported missing, having last been seen around 5 p.m. south of Parkview Field. A public safety alert was issued as concern for the young boy grew. The search, however, came to a heartbreaking end late that night.
Around 11:30 p.m., his body was discovered on a railroad elevation near the intersection of Hoagland Avenue and Melita Street.
The following days brought grim confirmation from the Allen County Coroner's Office. An autopsy determined that Mario Gilmer had died from a gunshot wound to the head. In an official press release on June 17, 2021, the coroner's office publicly identified Mario and stated that the cause of death was a gunshot wound, but crucially, the manner of death was listed as 'Pending Investigation.' The case remained under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Prosecutor's Office, and the Allen County Coroner's Office.
In the time since Mario's death, the official classification of the incident has remained unclear in public sources. Some reports indicated that Fort Wayne Police did not suspect foul play, and it was noted that the death had not been officially ruled a homicide. Despite this, there have been no subsequent announcements clarifying the final determination of the manner of death. Consequently, there have been no reports of any arrests made or suspects identified in connection with the case. The investigation by local authorities did not point to any immediate signs of a criminal act. The community was left to mourn a life lost under deeply troubling and unresolved circumstances.
