In the late hours of August 22, 2024, the sound of gunfire shattered the evening calm at the Arbors of Southtown apartment complex in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Responding to a call from an off-duty firefighter who heard the shots, police arrived at the 7900 block of Decatur Road to a grim discovery. Inside one of the apartments, they found 29-year-old Jamion Martin of Chicago, a male who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the efforts of medics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the death of Jamion Martin unfolded over the following weeks, leading to the identification of two suspects. On September 18, 2024, authorities arrested 63-year-old Dwayne Sims in the same area where the shooting had occurred, charging him with murder. According to court documents, the tragic incident may have been rooted in a dispute over stolen money, which had led to an alleged assault by Martin on Sims three days prior to the shooting.
Further investigation implicated a second individual, 34-year-old Gregory Maye Lovelady, who was charged on November 8, 2024. Lovelady admitted to being with Sims at the apartment on the night of the murder, claiming their purpose was to sell cocaine. Security footage from the apartment complex corroborated the presence of both Sims and Lovelady entering the apartment before the shooting and leaving shortly after. Lovelady, however, maintained that he was not armed and did not shoot Martin. After the incident, the two men allegedly fled to Chicago. Dwayne Sims is currently awaiting his jury trial.
