In the late hours of a Friday night in Fort Wayne, Indiana, a tragedy unfolded that would cut short the life of Tremaine Junior Barnett. On November 5, 2021, the 37-year-old Black male was discovered unresponsive in the driver's seat of his red Jeep on McClellan Street. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head. Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The Allen County Coroner's Office later confirmed the cause of death as gunshot wounds to the head and officially ruled the manner of death a homicide.
The investigation into Barnett's death led authorities to 33-year-old Robert Dashon James of South Bend, Indiana. Evidence revealed that James had been with Barnett in his vehicle on the night of the shooting. Investigators found two 9mm shell casings inside the Jeep. A crucial piece of evidence came from a bottle of tequila the two men were reportedly sharing, which had James's fingerprints on it. Further solidifying the case against him, GPS data from a home detention anklet Barnett was wearing placed him at the scene around 10:45 p.m. A tip to Crime Stoppers also indicated that James had been bragging about his involvement in the killing, which was allegedly connected to a drug deal. Upon his arrest, authorities found James in possession of $588 and a plastic bag containing what appeared to be drug residue.
Following his arrest in South Bend on December 13, 2021, Robert Dashon James was charged with the murder of Tremaine Junior Barnett. Initially, James attempted to deflect blame, claiming an accomplice he identified as 'Flex' was the one who shot Barnett while James was outside the vehicle. However, the weight of the evidence, including security camera footage and witness statements, pointed squarely at James as the perpetrator. In June 2024, a jury found Robert Dashon James guilty of murder. He was subsequently sentenced to 80 years in prison for the crime.
