In the spring of 2021, the Fort Wayne, Indiana community was shaken by the untimely death of 19-year-old John A. 'Benji' Peterson. A graduate of Bishop Luers High School and a freshman basketball player for Manchester University, Peterson was a young man with a promising future. On the night of March 26, 2021, his life was cut short by an act of gun violence that left his family and friends mourning the loss of a kind and gentle soul.

at the intersection of Vance Avenue and Reed Road. Peterson was stopped at a red light when a black Chevy Tahoe pulled up alongside his vehicle. In a violent ambush, shots were fired, and Peterson sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite his injuries, he managed to drive a short distance to Willard Drive before succumbing to his injuries. A passenger in Peterson's car at the time of the shooting was unharmed and was able to move into the driver's seat to steer the vehicle to a stop.
For over a year and a half, the investigation into Peterson's murder continued. A breakthrough came in November 2022 with the arrest of 22-year-old Jalan Carpenter. Evidence presented during his three-day trial in November 2025 painted a picture of a premeditated attack. Prosecutors utilized street camera footage that captured the shooting, social media posts showing Carpenter with firearms, and distinctive clothing that linked him to the scene. A key testimony came from a confidential informant who stated that Carpenter had admitted to the killing while they were together. The prosecution suggested the motive was related to disrespect. After deliberating, the jury found Jalan Carpenter guilty of murder and of using a firearm in the commission of a crime. He now faces a significant prison sentence for his role in the death of John A. Benji Peterson, with the possibility of up to 65 years for the murder charge and an additional 20 years for the firearm enhancement. His sentencing was scheduled for December 17, 2025, bringing a measure of justice to the family and friends of the young man whose life was tragically cut short.
