In the autumn of 2017, the city of Fort Wayne, Indiana, was troubled by a series of violent acts. Among the lives tragically cut short was that of Charlie DayJohn West, a 22-year-old Black / African American man. On October 20, 2017, West was discovered inside a residence in the 3000 block of Oliver Street, having been fatally shot. His death was officially declared the 24th homicide in Allen County for that year.
The investigation into West's death has unfortunately remained without a
resolution for years. As of early 2025, no arrests have been announced in connection with the shooting, and the case continues to be an open and unsolved homicide. The Fort Wayne Police Department has periodically sought assistance from the public, appealing for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the investigation and bring closure to West's family and community. The case is one of several unsolved homicides from that year, a period that saw a significant spike in violent crime in the area.
