In the autumn of 2017, the city of Fort Wayne, Indiana, was troubled by a series of violent acts. Among the lives tragically cut short was that of Charlie DayJohn West, a 22-year-old Black / African American man. On October 20, 2017, West was discovered inside a residence in the 3000 block of Oliver Street, having been fatally shot. His death was officially declared the 24th homicide in Allen County for that year.
