In the spring of 2019, the life of 16-year-old Xavier Ines Weir, a sophomore at Scecina Memorial High School in Indianapolis, was tragically cut short. The young man, known for his love of football and lacrosse, was shot and killed in the early morning hours of April 7, 2019, in the 400 block of Grovewood Drive in Beech Grove, Indiana. The incident was captured on surveillance cameras, which showed gunmen opening fire on Weir's vehicle, causing him to crash into a ditch.
His car then caught fire, and responding officers had to pull him from the burning vehicle. Weir was rushed to a hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries on April 8, 2019. An autopsy revealed he had suffered a gunshot wound that went through his right shoulder and another to his brain.
The investigation into Weir's death quickly led to two suspects: 16-year-old Isaiha Funez and 26-year-old German Parra, who was an active duty U.S. Army military police sergeant at the time. Funez was arrested on April 11, 2019, and was charged as an adult with murder and criminal recklessness. Parra was apprehended in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, on April 23, 2019, and also faced charges of murder and criminal recklessness. Investigators reported that the motive for the shooting was believed to be in retaliation for a prior robbery allegedly committed by Weir against Funez's brother. Funez had also claimed that Weir had been threatening him.
Both Funez and Parra eventually faced the judicial system for their roles in Weir's death. In March 2023, German Parra, a former U.S. Army military police sergeant, accepted a plea agreement. The murder charge against him was dismissed, and he was sentenced to 25 years for criminal recklessness and robbery resulting in serious bodily injury. With credit for time served and part of the sentence suspended, Parra's actual prison time was reduced to just over 14 years. In May 2023, Isaiha Funez also took a plea deal and was sentenced to 15 years for robbery resulting in death, with four years of credit for time served. Xavier Weir's mother expressed her frustration with the plea agreements, believing that the sentences were not sufficient for the loss of her son's life. In a lasting legacy, Weir's organs were donated, saving the lives of seven individuals.
