In the quiet community of Beech Grove, Indiana, the life of 28-year-old Devon Amill Ford was brought to a tragic and unexpected end on the morning of Sunday, February 16, 2020. A man known for his passion for cars and trucks, he was a graduate of Arlington High School and worked for JB Hunt. His life, however, was cut short in his own apartment, the result of a domestic dispute that escalated to a fatal act of violence.
On that Sunday morning, officers from the Beech Grove Police
Department were dispatched to an apartment in the 100 block of Diplomat Court following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they encountered Devon's 16-year-old nephew, Sylvester Ford, near the scene. Sylvester led the officers to the apartment where they discovered Devon in a bedroom, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased at the scene shortly thereafter.
The investigation into Devon's death quickly focused on his nephew, who had been living with him for a short time. Sylvester initially provided investigators with conflicting and fabricated stories. He told family members that five masked men had broken into the apartment and shot his uncle. He later changed his story, claiming it was two men who had committed the crime. His accounts of the event were inconsistent, raising suspicion among law enforcement.
As the investigation continued, the truth of the morning's events began to surface. Sylvester eventually admitted to investigators that he had shot his uncle. The catalyst for the fatal altercation was reportedly a disagreement over an iPad that Devon had taken from his nephew. In his confession, Sylvester claimed that he had shot his uncle and, in a state of panic as his uncle screamed in pain, he continued to fire, stating, 'I just kept going because I did not know how to stop.' After the shooting, he attempted to conceal his crime by disposing of the firearm in a dumpster at a nearby Burger King, where it was later recovered by police.
Despite his age, the severity of the crime led to Sylvester Ford being charged as an adult. Following a three-day jury trial in February 2023, he was convicted of the murder of his uncle, Devon Ford.
