A promising life was cut short on the Fourth of July in Shreveport, Louisiana, when 24-year-old Orlando Puryear Jr., a male and former standout football player, was killed in a violent exchange of gunfire. The incident unfolded as a rolling shootout, a chaotic scene that left three other individuals wounded. Puryear, who had been a celebrated wide receiver at Evangel Christian Academy, was rushed to Ochsner LSU Hospital but succumbed to his injuries just over an hour after the shooting at the
intersection of Jewella and Amelia Avenues.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, those who knew Puryear remembered him as a pivotal part of Evangel's 2016 state championship team, a young man for whom they had held high hopes. The Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office confirmed his identity through fingerprint comparison and ordered an autopsy to determine the official cause of death. The Shreveport Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the deadly shooting, which marked the 34th homicide in Caddo Parish that year.
The grief that followed Puryear's death was compounded by a tumultuous funeral service at Peaceful Rest Baptist Church. A brawl erupted during the proceedings, reportedly initiated by the deceased's uncle. The altercation, which witnesses said lasted for several minutes, prompted police intervention and the evacuation of the church. One person was arrested for disturbing the peace in connection with the fight.
