In the late summer of 2019, a domestic argument in an Indianapolis home escalated into a tragedy that claimed two lives and left a third person critically injured. On August 24, 2019, 37-year-old William 'Cornbread' Wilson Jr., a Black male, was shot and killed inside a residence on East 23rd Street and Guilford Avenue. The violence that erupted that day also resulted in the death of his infant nephew, 3-month-old Kahdor Wilson.
Responding to a report of a shooting, Indianapolis police
officers arrived at the home to find a grim scene. Inside, they discovered three people who had been shot. William Wilson Jr. and his young nephew were pronounced dead at the scene. William's mother was also found with gunshot wounds and was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. The incident sent shockwaves through the community, prompting an intense investigation into the devastating loss of life.
The investigation quickly identified William's 36-year-old girlfriend, Ivory Smith, as the perpetrator. According to reports, an argument between Smith and William escalated to a fatal point. Smith confessed to the police that during the heated dispute, she armed herself with a gun and shot William multiple times. As she continued to fire at him, she also unintentionally shot his mother and the infant, stating that she was unaware the baby was in the room at the time.
Following her confession, Ivory Smith was arrested and faced serious charges for her actions. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office charged her with two counts of murder for the deaths of William Wilson Jr. and Kahdor Wilson, and one count of attempted murder for the injuries sustained by William's mother. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of domestic violence, leaving a family and community to mourn the loss of two of its members.
