Randall Shields, a 24-year-old Black man, was fatally shot on October 28, 2022, while coming to the aid of his sister during a domestic dispute in Indianapolis, Indiana.
That afternoon, Shields and his mother drove to the Hawthorne Place apartments in the 5100 block of Butler Terrace to pick up his sister. She had called their mother for a ride, saying she was upset after an argument with her boyfriend.
When they arrived, they found the sister still arguing with the man, and Shields stepped in to intervene.
A short time later, Shields, his sister, and their mother were all inside their car preparing to leave. Before they could drive away, the boyfriend approached the vehicle with a handgun and opened fire, shooting both Shields and his sister. Though he had been critically wounded, Shields returned fire and struck the man.
Their mother sped away from the scene, driving about a mile to a Subway restaurant parking lot in the 5200 block of East 38th Street, where she called 911 for help. Emergency crews arrived and transported Shields and his sister to a local hospital. His sister was treated for a gunshot wound to her leg and survived, but Randall Shields succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
While officers were at the Subway, the investigation led them back to the apartment complex on Butler Terrace. There, they found the sister's boyfriend, who was also suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and arrested upon his release. He told detectives he did not have a gun and had not shot anyone.
The shooter was identified as 31-year-old Raymond Gilder. He was charged with murder for the death of Randall Shields. In April 2024, Gilder pleaded guilty to the killing. The following month, in May 2024, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
