Rita, described by loved ones as a bright and spirited student at Hoosier Academy with a passion for dance and entrepreneurship, was at her home on Adams Street on the city's near northeast side.
The residence, usually filled with the bustle of a large, close-knit family, became the scene of the city's deadliest mass shooting in over a decade.
The sequence of events began with a dispute between Rita's 17-year-old brother, Raymond Childs III, and his father regarding the teenager's violation of a curfew. Tensions escalated after Raymond III was told he would face consequences for his actions. In the hours that followed, the teenager retrieved a firearm and moved methodically through the home, shooting his family members in separate rooms. Rita was killed alongside her father, Raymond Childs Jr., her stepmother Kezzie Childs, her 18-year-old brother Elijah, and Elijah’s 19-year-old girlfriend, Kiara Hawkins, who was pregnant at the time. A younger 15-year-old brother managed to escape the house despite sustaining gunshot wounds and alerted the authorities, identifying his older brother as the shooter.
Law enforcement officers arriving at the scene discovered the lifeless bodies of the five victims and the unborn child. A manhunt was immediately launched for Raymond Childs III, who had fled the area. He was apprehended the following day, January 25, 2021, at a relative’s home in Indianapolis. Investigators recovered firearms believed to be used in the attack, and the surviving brother provided crucial testimony detailing the argument and the subsequent massacre. The suspect was charged as an adult with six counts of murder, one count of attempted murder for the shooting of his surviving brother, and carrying a handgun without a license.
