In the early morning hours of September 12, 2021, a large house party on the 800 block of East Washington Street in South Bend, Indiana, turned deadly. Montell O'Neal, a 24-year-old male, was found shot in the doorway of the home. Police were called to the scene around 3:45 a.m. following reports of gunfire. When they arrived, many of the partygoers had already fled. Investigators found evidence of gunfire both inside and outside the residence.
O'Neal, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, was pronounced dead at the scene.
For nearly two years, the investigation into Montell O'Neal's death continued, with the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit interviewing numerous witnesses. The case saw a significant breakthrough on June 27, 2023, when police apprehended Javante Walker. The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office formally charged Walker with murder and a firearm enhancement in connection with O'Neal's death. The investigation revealed that Walker and O'Neal had been involved in an altercation at a bar earlier on the night of the shooting and had to be physically separated. Their paths crossed again later at the house party, leading to the fatal confrontation.
The legal proceedings against Javante Walker culminated in a jury trial. On February 15, 2024, the jury found Walker, then 25, guilty of murder and also found him guilty of the firearm enhancement. On March 14, 2024, a judge sentenced Walker for the killing of Montell O'Neal. He received a 65-year sentence in the Indiana Department of Corrections, comprised of 55 years for the murder conviction and an additional 10 years for the firearm enhancement, with the sentences to be served consecutively.
