In the winter of 2015, in South Bend, Indiana, the life of 46-year-old Robert Joseph Duke, a Black male known affectionately as 'Red Bird,' was tragically cut short in a brutal act of violence. On the evening of January 4th, a quiet apartment building became the scene of a horrifying rampage that would claim two lives and leave a community in shock.
The perpetrator, Roy L. Walker, who was a resident of the same building, embarked on a violent spree. Walker, who was reportedly naked and armed, first targeted and killed another tenant, 43-year-old Michelle L. Blankenship, in her own apartment. He then forced his way into Robert Duke's residence. Inside, in an act of senseless violence, Walker shot and killed Duke. A third individual present in Duke's apartment at the time had a near-fatal encounter with Walker, narrowly escaping with his life when the assailant's gun failed to discharge.
The motive for the deadly assault remained unclear, though authorities indicated that Walker was acquainted with his victims. The violent outburst was not considered a random act. Shortly after the killings, police apprehended Roy L. Walker. He was found wearing only a pair of socks and had a rope around his neck.
Following his arrest, Walker faced serious charges for his actions. He was charged with two counts of murder for the deaths of Robert Duke and Michelle Blankenship, one count of attempted murder for the failed attempt on the third individual's life, and one count of residential entry. The case proceeded through the legal system, with the community closely following the developments, seeking justice for the lives abruptly and violently ended that January evening.
