In the summer of 2024, a life full of promise was tragically cut short in South Bend, Indiana. Alyyus Jacobi Michael Enoexpettiford, a 16-year-old male, was killed on June 14th. Known for his charming smile and love for skateboarding and anime, Alyyus was a student at Riley High School who was cherished by his family and friends. He was described as a mannerable, respectable, and sweet young man with a great sense of humor.
On that fateful Friday afternoon, police were called to the 500
block of Victoria Street on the city's south side around 5:45 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered Alyyus in a backyard, suffering from at least one gunshot wound to the head. He was quickly transported to Memorial Hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the homicide led authorities to name 19-year-old Derrick Myles as a suspect. Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a verbal altercation that occurred after Myles allegedly thought Enoexpettiford had thrown rocks at the home of one of his family members. On July 11, charges of murder and a firearm enhancement were filed against Myles, though the warrant was initially sealed to aid in his safe apprehension.
After exhausting efforts to locate him, the South Bend Police Department unsealed the warrant and sought the public's help in finding Myles, who they believed to be armed and dangerous with connections to both South Bend and Chicago. On August 25, Derrick Myles surrendered to the South Bend Police Department. He was subsequently taken to the St. Joseph County Jail. The murder charge carries a potential sentence of 45 to 65 years, with an additional 5 to 20 years possible for the firearm enhancement.
