Death by Force

Patrolman Lewis Keller of the South Bend Police Department was tragically killed on February 25, 1908, after being shot during a burglary incident. On the night of February 22, 1908, while walking his beat and checking buildings, Keller noticed an open door at a cigar store. As he entered the store to investigate, he was met with gunfire. Keller returned fire, and in the ensuing shootout, both he and one of the suspects were mortally wounded.
