On a day meant for gratitude and family, tragedy struck South Bend, Indiana, ending the life of 50-year-old Carl Shelton Sr. The male victim was at a gas station in the 3600 block of McKinley Avenue on November 24, 2023, when he was shot. Despite his injuries, Shelton managed to drive his vehicle to the vicinity of Ironwood Drive and Eugene Street, where authorities were finally summoned.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but the damage was done, and he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The South Bend Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit immediately launched an investigation into the homicide. Their efforts in processing evidence and piecing together the events of that fateful day eventually pointed them toward a suspect. Through their investigation, 23-year-old Daiveon Windmon was identified as the individual allegedly responsible for Shelton's death.
After presenting the case to a Grand Jury, an indictment was handed down, leading to felony charges against Windmon. On April 30, 2024, Daiveon Windmon was taken into custody and formally charged with Aggravated Battery in connection with the death of Carl Shelton Sr. He was subsequently booked into the St. Joseph County Jail to await further legal proceedings.
