In the early morning hours of October 6, 2016, a sense of unease settled over a home on Meadow Lane in South Bend, Indiana. What was planned as a robbery would soon escalate into a tragedy that would claim the life of 20-year-old Tyler Hurtle. The young man, a tow truck driver and mechanic known for his kind heart and mischievous smile, found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, walking into a situation that would abruptly end his life.
The events of that fateful morning were
set in motion by a scheme to rob a resident of marijuana and money. Three individuals, Caleb Smith, Sir Jackquarius JaQuan Lloyd, and Presley Jermaine Brown, conspired to carry out the robbery. Smith had reportedly arranged the 'drug deal' with the intention of ambushing the seller. However, before the intended target emerged, Tyler Hurtle and a female companion arrived at the residence. As they stood on the porch, they were attacked by a masked man. In the ensuing chaos, gunshots rang out, and Hurtle was struck. He fell from the porch, having sustained fatal injuries.
The investigation into Hurtle's death led authorities to Smith, Lloyd, and Brown. A key piece of evidence came to light when Lloyd, after being arrested on unrelated charges, confided in a fellow inmate. He revealed that he had ditched the gun used in the shooting in Leeper Park while fleeing from police. Investigators searched the area and recovered a pistol that was a match to the casings found at the crime scene. Further investigation, including cell phone data placing Brown and Lloyd in the vicinity of the murder at the time it occurred, solidified the case against the three men.
In the end, justice for Tyler Hurtle came in the form of lengthy prison sentences for the men responsible for his death. Sir Jackquarius JaQuan Lloyd was found guilty of murder, felony murder, and attempted armed robbery. He was sentenced to 87 years in prison. Presley Jermaine Brown, who was said to have 'finished off' Hurtle, was also convicted of murder and attempted armed robbery, receiving a 92-year sentence. Caleb Smith, the individual who orchestrated the robbery, pleaded guilty to attempted armed robbery. His cooperation and plea agreement resulted in a lesser charge, though he too would face time behind bars for his role in the tragic and senseless death of Tyler Hurtle.
