On the evening of April 18, 2022, the life of 28-year-old Civon Dominique Lee Green was cut short in South Bend, Indiana. The incident unfolded around 8:30 p.m. when residents in the 1300 block of 27th Street reported hearing gunshots. Witnesses observed a silver car, driven by Green, being pursued by a red SUV. The chase continued toward Northside Boulevard, where another gunshot was heard near Nuner Elementary School.
Upon investigation, police found two vehicles stopped in the middle
of the street. Green was discovered lying on the road between the cars, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound to the abdomen. Despite the efforts of a passerby who stopped to render aid, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the red SUV was identified as Green's 27-year-old girlfriend, Marqisha Monee Thomas.
Thomas was taken into custody for questioning and provided conflicting accounts of the events that transpired. She initially told the 911 operator that someone else had shot Green. Later, she claimed he had shot himself during a struggle for her 9mm handgun, which she said was on the passenger seat of her car. She alleged that after a confrontation, both had stopped their vehicles, and Green had approached her car. According to Thomas, a struggle for the gun ensued, and it discharged. However, she could not account for the three shell casings found in and around her passenger seat and denied that any other shots were fired. An autopsy later revealed no evidence that Green's hands were on the weapon when it was fired. The wound was from a close range but was not a contact wound.
Two days after the shooting, on April 20, 2022, Marqisha Thomas was arrested and charged with murder and a felony firearm sentence enhancement. Her trial was delayed due to court backlogs but eventually took place. On May 25, 2023, a jury found her guilty of the murder of Civon Green. Subsequently, on June 22, 2023, she was sentenced to 55 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections.
