In the late hours of a cold Monday night in South Bend, Indiana, the life of 24-year-old Arthur Kash Wielosinski was tragically cut short. On February 6, 2017, shots rang out in the 1100 block of Blaine Avenue, and when police arrived just before midnight, they found Wielosinski in an alleyway between Blaine and Cleveland Avenues, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy later confirmed that the young man's death was a homicide caused by the gunshot wounds. Arthur was a white male.
Known affectionately as 'Batman' to his friends and family, a nod to his favorite superhero, Arthur was a beloved figure in his community. Born and raised in South Bend, he attended Clay High School and was known for his love of sports, especially baseball which he played at Chet Waggoner. He was an ardent supporter of Notre Dame, the Colts, the Bulls, and was thrilled to see the Chicago Cubs win the World Series. Beyond sports, he found joy in fishing and cherished the time he spent with his siblings. For the last year of his life, he had been working as a welder at Morryde. His family and friends remembered him as a loving and kind person with a big heart.
In the wake of his violent death, the community mourned. A vigil was held in the very alley where his life was taken, with family, friends, and neighbors gathering to remember him and to take a stand against the gun violence that had shaken their neighborhood. His aunt spoke of the senselessness of his death, and his sister questioned what the future held when the year had begun with such a tragedy. Cupcake toppers adorned with the Batman logo were passed out in his honor, a small symbol of the light he brought to those who knew him.
Despite the initial investigation by the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit and the pleas from his grieving family for answers, no suspects were publicly identified, and no arrests were made in the immediate aftermath of his murder. The case left a painful void in the lives of his loved ones and a lingering question of justice within the South Bend community.
