In the late summer of 2022, the city of South Bend, Indiana, was rocked by a grim discovery that would unravel a story of violence. On the afternoon of Tuesday, August 9th, police were dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of Johnson Street. Inside the home, they found the bodies of two individuals, setting in motion a double homicide investigation. The male victim was identified as 24-year-old Phil Honer III.
He was found alongside 18-year-old Rainie Best.
Initially, the circumstances surrounding their deaths were unclear, but autopsies soon revealed a more sinister reality. The coroner's office ruled both deaths as homicides, confirming that Honer had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head, while Best had been shot in the head and back. The South Bend Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit took charge of the case, beginning the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to the two untimely deaths. The community was left searching for answers as investigators worked to uncover the truth behind the double homicide.
The investigation took a significant turn when a suspect was identified and taken into custody. Joseph Newgent, a 52-year-old South Bend man, was arrested in connection with the killings. Investigators were led to Newgent after examining one of the victim's cellphones. Upon questioning, Newgent admitted to his involvement in the deaths of Honer and Best. He told authorities that he was at the Johnson Street residence on August 4th and overheard an argument between the two victims. He claimed the argument escalated into a physical altercation, at which point he pulled out a gun and fired in Honer's direction. Newgent stated that he shot Honer and, in the process, inadvertently shot Best as well.
Following his confession, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office formally charged Joseph Newgent with two counts of murder and an additional firearm enhancement charge. He was subsequently booked into the St. Joseph County Jail. The arrest brought a sense of resolution to the community, though the tragic loss of two young lives continued to resonate. The case then moved to the judicial system, where the full weight of the evidence and testimony would be presented.
