On the evening of Friday, July 20, 2012, a violent incident unfolded in a residential neighborhood of South Bend, Indiana, claiming the life of Charles William Roberts III, an 18-year-old Black male. The events transpired at approximately 6:00 p.m. at a home located at 1101 North Adams Street, near the intersection with Vassar Avenue. Roberts was spending time on the front steps of the residence, accompanied by two friends, when the group was suddenly targeted.
According to reports from
the scene, a group of four to five young males approached the porch where Roberts and his companions were seated. The encounter quickly escalated into violence when at least one individual in the approaching group produced a handgun. Multiple shots were fired at the victims, striking Roberts and one of his friends. The sudden gunfire prompted a chaotic scene, leaving Roberts critically injured on the steps of his home.
Emergency responders rushed Roberts and the other wounded victim to a local hospital for urgent medical attention. While his friend was airlifted to another facility for treatment, Roberts underwent emergency surgery. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries approximately 45 minutes into the procedure, passing away later that evening.
