On Saturday, April 30, 2022, while at a relative's home on Woodbine Way, Kyler was accidentally shot by his nine-year-old relative. After fighting for his life for several days in the hospital, Kyler passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2022.
His father, Derek Jackson, remembered his son as a 'mathematical genius' who was excited about attending Kennedy Academy. The family was left heartbroken by the loss of a child described as 'everybody's baby.'
The South Bend Police Department investigated the incident, which was deemed an accidental shooting. The focus of the investigation included determining how the children gained access to a loaded handgun. Kyler's father publicly shared his grief and advocated for responsible gun ownership to prevent similar tragedies. A GoFundMe campaign was established to assist the family with funeral expenses.
The profound grief of the family was tragically compounded just days after Kyler's funeral. On May 17, 2022, Kyler's 32-year-old mother, Kaylynn Davidson, was shot and killed outside the Linden Grill in downtown South Bend. The incident stemmed from a physical altercation with another woman, identified as 26-year-old Kimarie Wright. According to court documents, during the fight, Wright pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots at Davidson as she was running away.
Kimarie Wright was arrested in connection with Davidson's death and was subsequently charged with murder and voluntary manslaughter. Although initially charged with murder, that charge was later dismissed. In November 2023, a jury found Wright guilty of voluntary manslaughter. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the shooting death of Kaylynn Davidson, bringing a legal conclusion to a case born from immense tragedy. The back-to-back deaths of a young boy and his mother left the South Bend community in mourning and highlighted the devastating impact of gun violence.
