In the late summer of 2015, a violent altercation outside a South Bend bar tragically cut short the life of 19-year-old Jorge Garcia. The young man, a male, succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, September 8, 2015, two days after being shot. The incident that led to his untimely death began with a dispute at Rumbas Bar in South Bend on Sunday, September 6.
Following the initial confrontation, the conflict spilled out into the streets, culminating in a vehicle pursuit.
Near the intersection of Sample and Olive Streets, shots were fired into the vehicle carrying Garcia, striking him. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, but his wounds proved to be fatal.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement identified and apprehended two suspects in connection with the crime. Juventino Vargas-Rodriguez, 20, and Ricardo Ramirez, 21, were taken into custody. Initially facing attempted murder charges, the accusations against them were upgraded to murder following Garcia's death. Both men were subsequently held at the St. Joseph County Jail without bond as they awaited legal proceedings for their alleged roles in the fatal shooting.
