In the early evening of January 18, 2024, the life of 51-year-old Dennis 'Dinky' Cunningham, a Black male, was tragically cut short in South Bend, Indiana. A well-known and beloved figure on the west side of town, Cunningham was known for his self-reliance and skill in various trades, often taking on odd jobs from laying floors to yard maintenance. He was a man who cherished family gatherings, his vibrant personality making him the life of every party.
He found joy in backyard barbecues, playing basketball, and dancing with his children.
On that Thursday evening, South Bend Police were dispatched to the Cedar Glen Apartments on South 26th Street following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Cunningham suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate attention, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The South Bend Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit launched an investigation into the homicide. Their efforts in processing evidence and following leads eventually pointed to a suspect: 56-year-old Anthony Perry. More than a month after the fatal shooting, on February 23, Perry was taken into custody by law enforcement.
Following the arrest, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office formally charged Anthony Perry with Reckless Homicide for his role in Dennis Cunningham's death. An additional Firearm Enhancement was added to the charges against him. Perry is currently being held at the St. Joseph County Jail. Family and friends gathered to honor Dennis 'Dinky' Cunningham's memory with a visitation and funeral service on February 9, 2024.
