In the winter of 2018, a dispute between two teenagers over a girl tragically escalated, leading to the death of 17-year-old D'Angelo Jennings in South Bend, Indiana. On the evening of Thursday, January 11, 2018, Jennings was in the 1800 block of North Johnson Street when an argument erupted. The disagreement, which started during a dice game, turned violent.
The altercation involved 19-year-old Torreay Fennessee.
During the course of the fight, Fennessee produced a firearm and shot Jennings. The single gunshot wound proved to be fatal for the young man. The incident cut short the life of D'Angelo, who was a father and had another child on the way. He had been focusing on obtaining his G.E.D. with aspirations of becoming a barber to provide a better life for his children.
In the aftermath of the shooting, an investigation was launched, which quickly identified Torreay Fennessee as the suspect. He was subsequently arrested and faced legal proceedings for his role in Jennings' death. In October 2018, Fennessee chose to plead guilty to charges of voluntary manslaughter and a firearm enhancement.
The following month, in November 2018, a judge sentenced Torreay Fennessee for his crimes. He received a total sentence of 30 years in prison. The sentence was structured as 20 years for the voluntary manslaughter charge, with an additional 10 years for the firearm enhancement, to be served one after the other. The court also suspended five years of the sentence and mandated that Fennessee serve two years of probation upon his eventual release from prison.
