Indiana, was known affectionately as 'Zay.' He had moved with his family to South Bend where he attended various schools including Lincoln Elementary, Marshall Middle School, and Adams High School. Friends and family remember him as a loving and fun person who enjoyed spending time with his family and playing basketball. He was also a creative individual, passionate about photography and music, writing his own lyrics and producing music under the rap name 'Spazzout Zxe.' He had recently moved back to South Bend after spending time in Indianapolis where he worked and completed his high school education.
The investigation into Walton-Davis's death quickly led to the identification of a suspect, 18-year-old Cyjarron Odynski. He was arrested on August 2nd and formally charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting. The case took on a wider significance due to the circumstances preceding the incident. Odynski had escaped from a juvenile justice outing to a South Bend Cubs baseball game just four days before the shooting. This escape and the subsequent death of Walton-Davis sparked criticism of the St. Joseph County Probate Court's Bridge Link Program, which was intended to help rehabilitate young offenders.
