In the late afternoon haze of September 26, 2016, the life of 19-year-old Kyron Ryon Deshawn Baker was tragically cut short in South Bend, Indiana. A Black / African American male, Kyron was discovered in an alley behind East Miner Street, near Coquillard Park, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound. The incident, which occurred around 2:42 p.m., unfolded just as children were beginning to make their way home from school.
Witnesses at the time reported seeing a man fleeing the scene, prompting a swift response from the South Bend Police Department to the area of Cedar and Arthur streets following calls of gunshots fired.
Upon their arrival, officers found Kyron's body, and the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit was subsequently called in to lead the investigation. An autopsy later confirmed that Kyron's death was a homicide resulting from the gunshot wound. In the immediate aftermath, the neighborhood was an active crime scene, with investigators canvassing for evidence and speaking to residents. The area, which is located near two daycare centers, was cordoned off as authorities worked to piece together the events that led to the young man's death. Despite their efforts and public appeals for information, the case has remained an active and ongoing investigation. To date, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the shooting.
Kyron was remembered by his family and friends as a loving, caring, and kind-hearted individual who was full of life.
