In the late hours of a Memorial Day in South Bend, Indiana, the life of Melvin Maurice Muhammad, a 43-year-old Black man, was cut short by gunfire. On May 28, 2018, police responded to reports of shots fired in the 600 block of Studebaker Street shortly after 11 p.m. Arriving at the scene near the Kickback Bar and Grill, officers discovered Muhammad with apparent gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, on March 2, 1975, Muhammad was a resident of South Bend at the time of his passing. He was an entrepreneur and a graduate of Grace College, holding both an Associate and a Bachelor of Science degree. Those who knew him remembered him as a kind-hearted and hilarious individual who deeply loved his family. His death left a void in the lives of his wife, seven children, and a large extended family.
The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit immediately took charge of the investigation into Muhammad's death. Detectives conducted interviews with witnesses who reported hearing approximately five gunshots before a vehicle was seen speeding away from the area. In the course of their investigation, authorities served two search warrants. An autopsy was scheduled to determine the exact cause and manner of death.
Despite the efforts of law enforcement, no arrests have been made in connection with the fatal shooting of Melvin Muhammad. The case remains an open and active investigation. Authorities have urged anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward to assist in bringing those responsible to justice. The community continues to mourn the loss of a man described as a courageous warrior with a heart of gold.
