In the late hours of a Memorial Day in South Bend, Indiana, the life of Melvin Maurice Muhammad, a 43-year-old Black man, was cut short by gunfire. On May 28, 2018, police responded to reports of shots fired in the 600 block of Studebaker Street shortly after 11 p.m. Arriving at the scene near the Kickback Bar and Grill, officers discovered Muhammad with apparent gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
