In the late afternoon of October 19, 2023, 22-year-old Jasani Taylor was fatally shot in the parking lot of the Quality Inn hotel on Lincoln Way West in South Bend, Indiana. Another young man, 20-year-old Amarion Kirk, was also killed in the incident. First responders arrived at the scene shortly before 2:30 p.m. to find both Taylor and Kirk inside a vehicle with apparent gunshot wounds; both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly turned their attention to surveillance
footage from the hotel. The video captured a Chevrolet Trax parked near the victims' vehicle. A male, later identified as 26-year-old Reontre Lawrence, was seen exiting the Trax and firing a rifle-style weapon multiple times into the driver's side of the car carrying Taylor and Kirk. After the shooting, the gunman fled the scene on foot, heading toward the nearby Beacon Heights Apartments.
The investigation into the double homicide led authorities to focus on Lawrence. At the crime scene, investigators discovered more than a dozen shell casings. Crucially, they also found Lawrence's cell phone inside the vehicle he had been driving. Further evidence, including paperwork belonging to Lawrence, was found both in the car and in a backpack. Surveillance footage confirmed he was carrying a similar backpack at the time of the shooting and showed him running from the scene.
Following the collection of this evidence, an arrest warrant was issued for Reontre Lawrence, charging him with two counts of murder. He was apprehended in Indianapolis. Following his conviction on two counts of murder, Lawrence was sentenced to a total of 80 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections.
