On October 27, 2023, 12-year-old Josiah Small of South Bend, Indiana, was fatally shot near the intersection of Indiana and Prairie Avenues. Officers responding to the scene around 9:30 p.m. found Josiah with apparent gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene. A 14-year-old boy also sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the incident and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
