On May 24, 2015, authorities in St. Joseph County, Indiana, responded to a violent incident that claimed the life of 22-year-old Tyler T. Layton. The events unfolded in the early morning hours outside the Hideout Lounge, a bar located on Chippewa Boulevard near the border of South Bend and Mishawaka. Police were dispatched to the parking lot around 4:50 a.m. following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers discovered three individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.
Tyler Layton was pronounced dead at the scene, having sustained fatal injuries during the altercation.
The investigation, led by the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit, revealed that the shooting was the tragic culmination of a dispute between Layton and another young man, 21-year-old Devin Johnson. According to interviews with the sole survivor of the incident, the two men had exchanged text messages and agreed to meet in the parking lot to settle a disagreement regarding a female acquaintance. The arrangement was reportedly for a physical fight involving only fists, with an explicit understanding that no weapons would be brought to the encounter.
Despite the agreement, Johnson arrived at the scene armed with a handgun. The confrontation quickly escalated when Johnson drew the weapon and opened fire. He shot Layton, killing him, and also fired upon Layton's 18-year-old girlfriend, who had accompanied him to the location. After shooting both victims, Johnson turned the gun on himself. The female victim survived her injuries and was later able to provide investigators with the critical details that clarified the sequence of events.
Devin Johnson was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries the following night, Monday, May 25, 2015. Following his death and the corroboration of the survivor's account, the Metro Homicide Unit officially ruled the case a murder-suicide. Authorities confirmed that because the shooter was deceased, no criminal charges would be filed, and the case was subsequently closed.
