In the early hours of a cold January morning in South Bend, Indiana, the life of 28-year-old Huey Hudson Jr. was tragically cut short. On Sunday, January 26, 2020, police were called to a home in the 600 block of South Liberty Street shortly after midnight, where they discovered Hudson inside, suffering from gunshot wounds. Medical personnel pronounced him deceased at the scene.
The events that led to his death began to unfold less than two hours earlier with a separate shooting incident involving his cousin.
Earlier that night, Hudson's cousin, Demarco Barnes, was shot and injured. Upon learning that a man named Troyae Scott was the alleged shooter, Hudson became angry. He discovered that three of Troyae's brothers were at the home of his own brother, Marquise Scott, on South Liberty Street. Armed and upset, Hudson went to the residence to confront them about his cousin's shooting.
An argument broke out between Hudson and one of Troyae's brothers, 20-year-old Troyon Scott. The confrontation escalated, and Troyon Scott fatally shot Huey Hudson Jr. multiple times. The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit was activated to handle the investigation. During their investigation at the scene, police also discovered a marijuana growing operation in the basement of the home.
Following the investigation, authorities arrested both Troyon and Troyae Scott. Troyon Scott was charged with murder and a firearm sentencing enhancement for the death of Huey Hudson Jr. His brother, Troyae Scott, faced charges related to the earlier shooting of Demarco Barnes. In April 2022, a jury found Troyon Scott guilty of murder and the firearm enhancement. He faced a sentence of 45 to 65 years for the murder charge, with an additional 5 to 20 years for the firearm enhancement.
