In the late hours of a Wednesday in South Bend, Indiana, the life of 37-year-old Christopher Dwayne Yakim was tragically cut short by senseless gun violence. On September 28, 2022, what began as a dispute between Yakim and his girlfriend at a gas station escalated into a fatal confrontation at his home in the 2100 block of South Michigan Street. After the initial argument, Yakim's girlfriend contacted a man named Jerrod Rakeem Sanders for a ride back to the residence she shared with Yakim.
Upon their arrival, an argument erupted between Yakim, who was on the porch, and Sanders. As the verbal altercation intensified, Yakim turned and went inside his apartment, closing the door behind him. In a fit of anger, Sanders allegedly told Yakim not to turn his back on him and then fired three shots through the closed door. Struck by the gunfire, Yakim was later transported to Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Following the shooting, Jerrod Rakeem Sanders fled the scene. He was apprehended the next day in Berrien County, Michigan. Sanders was subsequently charged with murder with a firearm enhancement. He was awaiting extradition back to Indiana to face the charges. If convicted on both counts, he could face a prison sentence of up to 85 years.
Christopher Yakim, born on October 31, 1984, in Niles, was a loving father, son, and brother. He worked as a forklift operator and was remembered by friends and family for his ever-present smile and love for life. His sudden and violent death left his community and loved ones in mourning.
