Charles A. Williams Jr., a 27-year-old Black man from Omaha, Nebraska, traveled to the I-29 Speedway near Pacific Junction, Iowa, on August 10, 2024, for an evening built around cars, racing and live music. The speedway was hosting a daylong gathering that included a car show and drag-racing activities, followed by an outdoor hip-hop concert featuring Boosie Badazz, Rob49 and Rich the Factor.
Hundreds of people were reportedly at the property as the concert's scheduled starting time approached.
At approximately 8:59 p.m., the celebration was shattered by gunfire in the speedway's parking lot. Williams and his friend, Marcus L. Johnson of Omaha, were both struck. Johnson was 28. Despite the presence of event security and law-enforcement officers working in the area, the shooter or shooters escaped before they could be taken into custody. Williams and Johnson died from their injuries, and the concert was canceled as authorities secured the property and began processing the scene.
The shooting occurred near the southwest portion of the speedway's parking area. The facility's general manager later stated that Williams and Johnson had been walking toward the concert entrance when a vehicle approached them. According to that account, people inside the vehicle opened fire on the two men and then drove out of the facility. The manager said there had been no visible argument, warning or exchange of words before the attack. Investigators, however, have released few official details about the precise sequence of events, the number of assailants or the possible motive.
In the immediate aftermath, law-enforcement agencies launched a wide search for those responsible. The Omaha Police Department deployed its Able-1 helicopter to assist in looking for suspects. Deputies also controlled traffic leaving the venue while investigators searched for evidence and attempted to identify witnesses among the large crowd. The Mills County Sheriff's Office led the local response with assistance from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Iowa State Patrol, the Omaha Police Department and other surrounding agencies.
No reliable public description of the suspects has been released by investigators. Unverified descriptions circulated on social media after the shooting, but officials did not endorse those claims, and community members warned that vague rumors could unfairly place uninvolved people under suspicion. Authorities have also not publicly identified the vehicle reportedly used in the attack or disclosed whether surveillance recordings, shell casings, firearms evidence or other forensic material were recovered.
The investigation remained active after the initial search produced no arrests. In September 2024, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Omaha Police Department renewed their appeal for information that could identify and locate the people involved. Omaha Crime Stoppers announced that an anonymous tip leading to an arrest in the double homicide could qualify for a reward of as much as $25,000. Investigators emphasized that people could submit information without publicly revealing their identities.
More than a year after the killings, the families of Williams and Johnson continued asking witnesses to come forward. Relatives stressed that the speedway was crowded and believed someone must have seen the attackers, recognized the vehicle or learned something afterward. Their public pleas reflected the frustration of knowing that many potential witnesses were nearby while the case remained unresolved.
As of the latest publicly available reporting, no suspect has been officially named, no arrest has been announced and no one has been charged, tried or convicted in connection with the deaths of Charles A.
