In the early hours of Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023, a dispute in downtown South Bend, Indiana, escalated into a fatal shooting that claimed the life of Eddie Tyler, a 24-year-old Black male. The incident unfolded near the parking lot of Finnie's Next Door bar on South Lafayette Boulevard, shattering the holiday morning with violence. An argument had reportedly broken out between Tyler, his brother, and another man, 28-year-old Marcus Hatcher of Niles.
As the altercation intensified,
Hatcher retrieved a rifle from the trunk of his vehicle. Court documents and security footage from the area detailed how Hatcher then opened fire on the car Tyler was occupying. Struck by the gunfire, Tyler was privately transported to a local hospital for his injuries. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified Marcus Hatcher as the primary suspect. The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office formally charged him with one count of murder and a firearm enhancement. Hatcher was subsequently taken into custody. According to court records, the initial argument had become heated, leading to Tyler and his brother drawing handguns. After Tyler was shot, his brother allegedly returned fire at Hatcher.
In November 2023, Marcus Hatcher's case went to trial. Following the proceedings, a jury found him guilty, not of the original murder charge, but of the lesser offense of reckless homicide. The jury also found him guilty of the firearm enhancement. In February 2024, Hatcher was sentenced for his role in Eddie Tyler's death. He received a total sentence of 15 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections, which consisted of three years for the reckless homicide conviction and an additional 12 years for the firearm enhancement.
