On May 30, 2022, the life of 17-year-old African American Xavier Richard Fairley was tragically cut short in a violent incident in Indianapolis, Indiana. A recent graduate of North Central High School, Xavier had been preparing for a promising future with plans to attend Arizona State University to major in Computer Animation Art. The fatal shooting occurred at an apartment complex on the southwest side of the city, where police were called to investigate reports of gunfire.
According to
accounts shared by community members and loved ones, the shooting took place during a party. Xavier, known for his warm smile and ability to connect with others, was struck by gunfire in what witnesses described as a chaotic scene. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, the injuries proved fatal, leaving his family and friends to mourn the loss of a young man they described as 'Forever 17.' His funeral was held at Stuart Mortuary, where speakers lamented the cycle of gun violence claiming the lives of teenagers in the city.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department homicide detectives launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Xavier's death. As of June 2022, authorities had not publicly announced any arrests in connection with the case. Community members expressed frustration, noting that there were likely witnesses at the party who knew the identity of the shooter but had not yet come forward. Detective Doug Swails was assigned to the case, and police continued to urge anyone with information to contact the department or Crime Stoppers to help bring justice to the grieving family.
