On the evening of October 3, 2023, tragedy struck on the far east side of Indianapolis when Robert Louis Hornbuckle Jr., a 46-year-old Black/African American male, was fatally shot. The incident unfolded at an apartment complex in the 10100 block of John Marshall Drive, marking a grim period for the community which had seen another fatal shooting in the same complex just three days prior. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called to the scene around 8 p.m.
following reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Hornbuckle grievously wounded inside the driver's seat of a van. He had sustained gunshot injuries and was in critical condition. First responders rushed him to Eskenazi Hospital, but despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries later that evening. The Marion County Coroner's Office officially identified him the following day. Detectives working the case have suggested that the initial shooting occurred a short distance from where Hornbuckle was found. It is believed that after being shot, he managed to drive the van to the location where police eventually found him.
The death of Robert Louis Hornbuckle Jr. was the second homicide at the Amber Woods apartment complex within a 72-hour span, deeply unsettling residents and community leaders. A woman living in the complex with her young children expressed her fear, stating her own apartment had been struck by bullets on two separate occasions. In the wake of the violence, police and community leaders emphasized their commitment to addressing the situation. However, as of the latest available reports, no suspects have been identified or taken into custody in connection with Hornbuckle's murder. The investigation remains active, and authorities have urged the public to come forward with any information.
