On a Saturday night in the spring of 2024, the life of Kevin Jackson, a 50-year-old man, was ended by gunfire at a gas station on the northwest side of Indianapolis. The shooting occurred on April 27 at the intersection of North High School Road and West 38th Street, prompting an immediate homicide investigation.
Around 9 p.m., officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a report of a person down.
They arrived to find Jackson lying outside a vehicle with what were described as trauma injuries from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators turned to surveillance footage from the gas station to piece together what happened.
The video showed a man wearing a pink shirt, black pants, and black shoes, with an extended gun magazine visible in his waistband, entering the station’s convenience store. Inside, he was heard on the phone saying, “I got no money, I only got $20 on Cash App.” Soon after, Jackson entered the store and spoke with the man. The two then left together and got into the car Jackson had arrived in. Just over two minutes later, seven gunshots were heard, which investigators believed were fired from inside the vehicle.
Both men exited the car after the shots. Jackson walked a short distance before collapsing near a gas pump. The man in the pink shirt ran around to the driver's side of the car, appeared to remove something from inside, and then fled on foot. He was seen getting into an SUV that sped away from the area with its lights off.
Although an initial search involving K9 units and a drone failed to locate the suspect, the investigation quickly gained traction. In Jackson’s car, police found a pink lemonade bottle, glasses worn by the suspect, a bag of marijuana, and a digital scale. Crucially, they obtained transaction information from a drink the man in the pink shirt had purchased with a debit card, which helped lead them to his identity.
A few days later, on a Thursday, police arrested 19-year-old Daryion Caldwell in connection with Jackson’s death. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office formally charged Caldwell with murder and robbery.
The case later concluded when Daryion Caldwell pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. He was sentenced to 22 years, with 15 of those years to be served in prison. According to the latest available information from February 2026, the case is resolved.
