In a tragic turn of events, 23-year-old Austin Smith of Indianapolis, Indiana, was killed in a shooting. The incident also resulted in the death of 51-year-old Melissa Smith and critically injured another woman.
The violence unfolded at a home in the 3900 block of North Pasadena Street. According to investigators, the surviving victim arrived at the residence with her 2-year-old child to find Marcus Minor arguing with Melissa Smith.
Despite her pleas for Minor not to harm anyone, he opened fire, shooting the women. The child, who was found unharmed on a bed next to the victims, was present during the horrific event. One responding police officer described the scene as one of the worst he had ever witnessed, particularly due to the presence of the young child.
In October 2023, a jury found Marcus Minor guilty of the murder of Melissa Smith and the attempted murder of the other woman. However, the jury found Minor not guilty of murder in the death of Austin Smith. In March 2024, Minor was sentenced to 95 years in prison for his convictions. Following the sentencing, the Marion County Prosecutor stated, “Two people lost their lives and another woman was seriously injured as a result of the defendant's actions and now he will spend the rest of his life in prison.” The prosecutor's office also extended their thoughts to the Smith family as they continue to cope with the tragic loss.
