In the early hours of a Monday morning, on October 3, 2016, the life of 23-year-old Tre Spencer was tragically cut short in a shooting in the Broad Ripple neighborhood of Indianapolis. Spencer, a male, was a well-regarded former wrestler at Pike High School. The incident that led to his death also resulted in the injury of another man, 22-year-old Shaquille Potts, who fortunately survived his injuries.
The events of that night unfolded as a long-standing feud between two groups reignited
inside a local nightclub. After the establishment closed, the conflict spilled out into a nearby alley. It was in this alley that the fatal shots were fired, leaving Spencer dead and Potts wounded. The sound of the gunfire alerted a nearby off-duty police officer who discovered the two victims.
In the wake of the shooting, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Taskforce, launched an investigation that led to the arrest of 23-year-old Marcus Barnes on October 25, 2016. Barnes was taken into custody on the southwest side of Indianapolis and faced a preliminary charge of murder for his alleged role in Spencer's death.
The legal proceedings against Marcus Barnes began, and in April of 2018, the case went to trial. The prosecution presented its evidence, which included testimony from witnesses who identified Barnes as the shooter. The defense, however, argued their case, and after eight hours of deliberation, the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict, resulting in a hung jury and a mistrial. Following the mistrial, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office announced its intention to retry the case, with a new court hearing scheduled for May 2, 2018. However, the final outcome of any subsequent legal proceedings, including whether a retrial occurred, a plea agreement was reached, or the charges were dismissed, is not publicly available.
