On the morning of July 26, 2018, authorities in Indianapolis, Indiana, were summoned to a residential area on the city's northeast side following the discovery of an unresponsive individual. Upon arriving at the 2800 block of Stuart Street, located near the intersection of 30th Street and North Sherman Drive, first responders found the body of 46-year-old Eric Lamont Averitte, a Black male, lying in the front yard of a home.
Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene, and an investigation was immediately launched into the suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
In the hours preceding the discovery, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department had received notification of shots fired in the same vicinity during the pre-dawn darkness. Officers had been dispatched to the area around 3:30 a.m. to investigate the reports of gunfire; however, limited visibility hindered their search, and they were unable to locate a victim or evidence of a crime at that time. It was not until daylight broke that a resident spotted the victim outside and alerted law enforcement, revealing that the earlier disturbance had been a fatal shooting.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office subsequently ruled the death a homicide, confirming that the victim had died from gunshot wounds. Detectives canvassed the neighborhood and sought assistance from the public, hoping that community members might come forward with information regarding the shooter. Despite these efforts, available records indicate that no suspects were apprehended and no charges were filed in the immediate aftermath of the incident, leaving the case without a reported arrest in online databases.
