On a tragic November night in 2016, a life was abruptly cut short in Norfolk, Virginia. Tony Boulos, a 41-year-old male employee of the Shop 'N Go on East Liberty Street, was closing the store when he was fatally shot. Just after midnight on November 29th, police responded to a call about a gunshot victim and discovered Boulos in the parking lot, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The initial investigation suggested that the shooting may have been a personal and planned attack, as Boulos was shot multiple times at close range.
The Norfolk Police Department quickly began a homicide investigation, collecting evidence from the scene, including surveillance footage from the store. Their efforts led to a significant development in the case just a few days later. On December 2, 2016, investigators arrested 22-year-old Byron Joyce in connection with the shooting. Joyce was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. However, the path to justice took an unexpected turn. Despite the initial arrest and charges, the murder case against Byron Joyce ultimately fell apart. Prosecutors in Norfolk decided to withdraw the charges against him. This decision was reportedly due to a witness expressing an unwillingness to testify in the case. Without this key testimony, the prosecution's ability to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt was significantly hampered, leading to the collapse of the case against the man who had been accused of ending Tony Boulos's life.
